An elegant, witty and generous woman was lost to the world May 22, 2011, when a tornado devastated a large part of Joplin, Mo.Born in Joplin in 1927, Charlotte Hopwood, "Char" as she was known, moved with her family to Emporia, Kan., and then to Oak Ridge, Tenn., when her father went to work on the Manhattan Project in 1944. She later lived and worked in St. Louis, Denver and elsewhere but spent many years working in Los Angeles for the Los Angeles Times, retiring after 30 years. Her position at the Times was with the newspaper's syndicate arm which worked with and distributed articles by Art Buchwald and cartoons by Paul Conrad among others.
Her many interests grew out of her love of music, in particular the Big Band sound of Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. She played the clarinet and piano and grew to love the theatre organ, joining at least five clubs in Southern California and participating in workshops all over the country. In Oak Ridge she sometimes took her clarinet and climbed up a tree in the woods near her home to practice so she would not disturb shift workers sleeping during the day. Ballroom dancing was also a big part of her life and she took lessons and participated in contests for several years. She would want to you know, also, that she loved baseball and bled Dodger Blue.
The fourth of seven children, Char maintained her strong family roots for all of her life, always there for siblings and nieces and nephews when times got a little tough. She was unhappy about being pulled out of high school in Emporia where she was to enter her senior year and never felt comfortable in Oak Ridge. The day after she graduated she left for Texas where she joined her sister, Florence, and worked briefly at a veterans' hospital where her brother-in-law was recovering from severe wounds incurred in the D-Day invasion of France. Char lived a good life and developed many, many good friends along the way.
In 2005, she sold her home in Burbank, Calif., and moved back to Joplin where her sister, Marian Russell, was living. After experiencing several storms she had commented to others, "This Missouri wind is going to be the death of me." And it was. Her sister, Marian, and her brother, John, were with her in her home at the time of the tornado but were unhurt. Marian is now living in Evansville, Ind., and John in Louisville, Tenn.
Charlotte was predeceased by her mother and father, Norval R. and Florence Hopwood; sisters, Florence Allen and Frances Russell; and nephew, Gary C. Hopwood.
She leaves her sister, Marian Russell, formerly of Joplin; brothers, John Hopwood and Sam Hopwood (wife, Mary Jane); and sister, Carol Gallagher (husband, Joseph); nieces Marilyn Stanford, Linda Boostrom (husband, Robert), Victoria Sieh (husband, Bob), Katherine McCrory, Sharon Kallam (husband, Hans), Susan Jenkerson, and Sandra Guinn; nephews, David Heagerty, and James Russell (wife, Marie); and 15 grand-nieces and nephews.

Those who were blessed to know Will watched him live a full and joyful life in his short 18 years. Very few of us can say we’ve accomplished half of the things this young man has done or touched a community with a heart such as his. Will has left an endless legacy to the people influenced by his numerous YouTube videos, tweets, and outstanding contributions to those in need. To recognize the enormity of those lives he touched, he had over 2 million upload views on his Willdabeast YouTube account, over 6,000 followers on Twitter (@Wildabeast and @WillNorton), and over 800 friends on his personal Facebook page, not to mention the 50,000 people across the world who have been praying for him since the storm through the Help Find Will Norton Facebook community page.
Will has always noticed the small things in life as an excited and optimistic dreamer. With such a creative mind, we’ve witnessed his many cleaver videos as he partnered with YouTube with the ability to reach thousands. One of his videos mentioned the 50 things he had done as of 3 years ago. We can add multiple highlights to this list including graduating high school on the very day of this tragedy. To name a few, Will loved traveling, and one of his favorite places was Africa, where he got to see the great wildebeest migration. He played on a state-level tennis team and became a private pilot this year. He traveled to Washington DC with his state-winning US Constitution Team where he rallied outside of the White House after Bin Laden was killed. Will was an avid volunteer and loved the Joplin Humane Society. He was accepted to Chapman University for Film Production, which was his lifelong dream. Will’s faith in his savior was evident in his everyday life and powerfully so, as he quoted scripture in the arms of his earthly father before being taken to his heavenly father that day.
A celebration of his life will be held at Christ’s Church of Oronogo on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Joplin Chapter of the American Red Cross.

A former New Yorker was identified as the third Filipino fatality in the Joplin, Missouri tornado that killed some 140 people and left thousands homeless on May 22.Thomas Sarino, 76, a former employee at Warner Brothers in New York, was reportedly crushed by boulders in his apartment at 2001 Connecticut Avenue in Joplin when the monster tornado — the deadliest single U.S. tornado recorded in 61 years — ravaged six miles of Joplin town.
The first two Filipino victims were Grace Luyug Aquino, 46, a mother of three and receptionist for the China Pantry; and Estrelita Manansala Moore, 64, a breast cancer survivor and hairdresser at JC Penney.
Both are natives of Pampanga, Philippines.
Sarino, a Cebuano who was a naturalized American citizen, was not reported missing earlier because he lived alone and had no immediate family members in Missouri, according to ABS-CBN, which added that Sarino was not known among Joplin’s Filipino community.
His death was only confirmed five days after the devastation.
According to a niece in Cebu, Grace Sarino, she was contacted through Facebook on May 28 by a certain Taylor Jayne Thompson, who relayed to her the coroner’s confirmation of Thomas Sarino’s death.
The niece told ABS-CBN that a certain Mrs. Gillette, a supposed neighbor of Thomas Sarino, spoke to Thompson and claimed that she saw him being pulled from the rubble “deceased.”
Grace said she last spoke to her uncle on May 2.
Grace said her uncle was an accountant at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Manila before immigrating to New York City, where he landed a job at Warner Brother Inc.’s finance department.
In 1995, he moved to Joplin to work for Loma Linda Golf Resort as vice-president of the finance department until his retirement.
Sarino’s death was confirmed as the families of Grace Aquino and Estrelita Moore laid the victims to rest.
Aquino’s family held a wake on May 27 at the Mason-Woodard Funeral Home in Joplin, where hundreds paid their respects, according to ABS-CBN.
A memorial service was held on May 28 followed by cremation.
A native of Floridablanca, Pampanga, Aquino reportedly died when she used her body to shield her 12-year-old son from a collapsing wall at Harmony Heights Baptist Church while they were attending an evening mass.
The boy survived with minor bruises and told his family how his mother died before his eyes.
Moore, on the other hand, was killed when the tornado sucked her out of her destroyed house.
She was still clutching bottles of medicine when her body was found in the second floor of the building next to her home.
Moore’s remains were also cremated although there was no public viewing and no date set for the return of her ashes to the Philippines, reports said.
Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Crematory said memorial services will be held in the Philippines at a later date when Moore’s ashes are returned to her family in Pampanga.
